On the independent circuit, Martinez wrestled under the name Davina Rose. She wrestled for Big Time Wrestling from 2008-2012 and considered the promotion her home.

She began branching out to other promotions from 2011 to 2012 and began to work for NWA Championship Wrestling, based in Hollywood and Shine Wrestling.

In October, 2010, Davina Rose teamed with Serena, who would become a mentor for Rose. When she made her debut for Shimmer, in October 2011, Rose interjected herself in Serena’a feud with The Canadian Ninjas. She  would however, go on to lose her debut match at Shimmer, against Mercedes Martinez.

It wouldn’t be until 2012, that she picked up her first win with Shimmer, in a tag team match when she teamed with Mia Yim to defeat Melanie Cruise and Mena Libra. She would then go on to win her first two singles matches, against Cherry Bomb and Rhia O’Reilly.

NXT (2012-Present)

In December 2012, Martinez signed with WWE and was assigned to their developmental territory, NXT. In January, she made her NXT debut at a live event in which she wrestled under a mask.

Martinez then began using the name Bayley. Her first NXT television match was a defeat to Paige on the March 20th episode of NXT.

Bayley then transitioned her character into a more naive fangirl. She then was eliminated in the first round of the NXT Women’s Championship tournament by Alicia Fox. Bayley then had an opportunity to face AJ Lee for the WWE Divas Championship on the 21st August, but she was unsuccessful in winning the title.

On September 4th, Bayley picked up her first NXT victory, in a tag team match when she teamed with Charlotte to defeat Alicia Fox and Aksana. She was then asked to join The BFF’s, but she remained loyal to Charlotte. On November 13th, Bayley and Charlotte took on The BFF’s in a tag team match. During the match, Charlotte attacked Bayley and joined forces with The BFF’s.

Bayley then briefly joined forces with Natalya, allowing her to pick up two big victories over Sasha Banks, one singles match and one tag match.

On May 1, 2014, Bayley lost to Sasha Banks in the first round off the NXT Women’s Championship Tournament. Not to be deterred though, Bayley pinned NXT Women’s Champions Charlotte in a tag team match and then defeated Sasha Banks in a singles match to become the number one contender.

She would get her NXT Women’s Championship match at NXT TakeOver: Fatal-4-Way, but she failed to win the championship, she also failed to win the rematch.

This led to Bayley forming an alliance with former rival Charlotte in order to feud with Banks and Lynch. On the November 27th episode of NXT, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch attacked Bayley, injuring her knee. She would return on the January 21, 2015, episode of NXT, when she saved Charlotte from an attack by Lynch and Banks. After making the save though, Bayley reluctantly attacked Charlotte.

Feuding With Emma

In March, Bayley began feuding with Emma, after Emma criticized Bayley for being too nice. Emma claimed that it was Bayley’s niceness that had prevented her from becoming the NXT Women’s Champion. This led to a match between the two on the April 1st episode of NXT, which was won by Bayley. On April 29, Emma provided the distraction that allowed Dana Brooke to defeat Bayley. The following week, Bayley, attacked Emma after her defeat to Charlotte. This led to a match at NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable, where Bayley and Charlotte teamed up to defeat Emma and Dana Brooke.
