The return of the WWE brand split has been rumored for a while now, but an announcement in Variety appeared to have confirmed it by advertising Smackdown as a weekly live show starting on Tuesday July 19.
WWE.com has since confirmed that both RAW and Smackdown will have unique rosters, saying:
This bold move will have major ramifications for all of WWE and exemplify the New Era, as both Raw and SmackDown will each feature their own unique rosters and rivalries following an imminent Superstar draft.
What this will mean for the NXT brand is still not clear. Will it remain as a stand alone brand, and if so will it be in direct competition with RAW and Smackdown, or will it be largely used as it is right now.
There is also the opportunity of NXT talent being included in the upcoming draft.
The same goes for the WWE Championship, will WWE once again split the championship by brand and have a heavyweight champion for each brand, or will we still have one unified champion, who will perform on both brands.
We will keep you informed of any further details and developments as soon as they become available.
